Application
Apr. 4th, 2010 02:30 pmHi.
I've been lurking and reading in your game for a while now, and decided I would like to join in the fun as well. In particular since you seem to be drawing near to the end of a plot-line.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Linda; I am German; I am living near Munich, which is in Bavaria. I'll be 35 this summer. I'm married with two sons. Were Asatru. By training, I'm a teacher for English and „Deutsch“, worked as a publisher's lector for a couple of years, but I'm currently not working aside from helping out my husband. He runs and art gallery and dabbles in painting himself.
I read anything from thriller to fantasy to sci fi, with a strong tendency towards the latter.
My roleplaying experience is mainly limited to traditional pen and paper games, such as DSA, though I have played Online-Forum roleplaying games years ago. I have only been lurking for the past five years or so. I don't write fanfiction, but I can provide you with a bit of original, yet unpublished, writing if you need a sample. I'd ask that it be treated confidentially, though.
I like a challenge, and therefore, I am applying for a character that I would love to play, even though I expect that you will be opposed to him at the beginning.
Let me try to convince you?
Atlan da Gonozal.
Where is he from? A German Sci Fi (yes, Sci Fi. I know. Difficult.) series.
Let me describe him first, then tell you a bit about his history. Then I'll explain why and how/with which liberties he is going to work in the game. I know this isn't according to your usual application form. I hope you can forgive that.
Character Description
He is 1.87 m tall, and athletic. His hair is silver-white, a bit over shoulder-length and usually worn open. His features are sharp. His nose a bit too large and hooked. His eyes are pale blue. He looks to be in his thirties.
He loves red wine and women, likes children and animals, except for dogs, who he thinks are loud and dirty. His favorite flower is the carnation.
While he can fence at least well enough to not be considered a hopeless beginner by Michael and Duncan, his preferred fighting style is unarmed combat.
He is practically immortal, by virtue of an egg-shaped device he wears on a chain around his neck. During his centuries on earth, he was repeatedly forced to swallow it to keep it safe, and needed to have it removed from his stomach again by rather barbaric means. That led to some rather prominent and barbaric-looking scars over his stomach.
Apart from keeping him from aging, this device, called a cell-activator, also neutralizes poisons, helps him make do with very little sleep, heals any wounds quickly. He can be killed by accident or on purpose, though.
He often leads lengthy discussions with his own brain, a part of which is thinking independently (see below). He is rather sarcastic, at times scornful. He curses in various old Earth languages.
History
I'm going to summarize. Giving 10 000 years in detail would be – difficult.
He was born on October 9th, 8045 B.C., as Mascaren da Gonozal, son of the Emperor of his people, on the planet Arkon II. His father was deposed and murdered by his uncle when he was three. His father's surgeon Fartuloon rescued the young prince and took him far away, to the rim of the empire (this is Sci Fi, remember?), where he raised him as his adopted son, under the name of Atlan, and trained him as his apprentice until, when Atlan was 18, they were found by his uncle's troops.
Now, Atlan's species has a section of their brains that can think independently from the rest of the person, very logically, and that also gives them photographic memory. This section needs to be activated in a special process, which in turn must be earned by going through a series of examinations called the ARK SUMMIA. Atlan did that, then proceeded to gather and army and get back his rightful throne.
Many years later, he was given his cell activator by “IT”, an incredibly powerful being that pursues some kind of “cosmic plan”. Again, years later, he crashed his ship on this little planet in some far-off-system, fought some other people who had also landed there, and somehow managed to sink a small continent, which happened to be named after him.
He wants to go home, desperately, but there is no way for him to get off of this planet... He spends centuries at a time in deep, technically induced sleep in the remains of his ship under the sea, then at irregular intervals surfaces and wanders the world for a while, before he goes back to sleep.
The last time he retreated into his sphere down there was in 1945, when he feared an atomic war would devastate the world.
How he would work
The Perry-books accept parallel worlds and parallel timelines as a given. You accept different versions of the same god. That's not that far off, I hope. For me, this would be a parallel timeline to the one in the books, one in which things happened like they did in the real world. Therefore, he would surface in 2003 to find the world as we know it, tap into the internet, be intrigued by lower Tadfield. Drop by.
He is used enough to strange creatures that he would not find the hotel's inhabitants all that strange. The angels' god he would probably equate to “IT”. They certainly seem to have a pretty similar personality. That is one entity he would try to avoid contact with.
About the characters present:
Gabriel he would probably find good company, and spend time in the library and playing with his cats. Maybe get one himself, too.
Aziraphale he would find amusing, though the poor chap would probably become the object of some of his more biting remarks.
Michael would find someone just as adept at making up weird nicknames for people as he himself is.
Baraq he would probably dismiss as a pretty normal chap.
American Loki he would find amusing to annoying, and might also have a few rather stingy remarks for. If he came across him in some animal shape and that animal seemed tame he'd probably be delighted until he found out the animal was Loki, at which point he'd refuse to go on with the petting and playing, but he wouldn't hold the shape-changing against Loki.
Norse Loki he would be wary of. Something about the way that chap keeps trying to worm his way into people's good graces would just seem odd.
War, beautiful woman that she is, he would possibly try to pursue as a romantic interest, though I expect she wouldn't be interested.
Trilby he would offer to help with his research, and possibly have fun trying to send him down odd
routes that turn out to be cul-de-sacs.
Duncan he'd probably see as a kindred spirit in so far as they both lived in different centuries on this world. Maybe they even know each other from a couple hundred years ago?
In Joe, he would mainly be interested because Joe is the barman. I expect that he would spend quite a few nights at the bar.
Rose he would treat like a servant, since she's the cleaning girl. He'd be polite, but very much the person paying for her services, the person in charge, the lord to her servant.
Towards Sister Mary, he would be the perfect gentleman, since she is the lady of the house, so to say. Very attentive, but not sexually interested. Very polite.
Adam, he would treat like a young man who still has a lot to learn. He'd consider him young enough to expect him to listen to the older people around, heed advice.
The Sphinx, he'd find as interesting as War (probably as futilely so), but also stimulating conversation-wise. In the long run, he'd prefer her company to that of War, I'm pretty sure.
Ishtar I haven't seen enough of to comment on.
Now, fire away. I'm going to be gone for half an hour, putting on my armor and grabbing some sword, then I'll be ready to defend my thesis. Erm, character.

Date: 2010-04-04 01:13 pm (UTC)Now that would possibly indicate someone using advanced weather control. Someone using advanced weather control might have some space craft hidden away. That would mean going home.
Once he'd be there, he'd quickly be enjoying himself enough to just stay a couple of years, I'd expect.

Date: 2010-04-04 03:25 pm (UTC)Aziraphale would bite back, though, as he's also quite good at biting remarks. Atlan can dish it out, but can he take it? AKA, would he respect someone who can insult him right back or would it really make him angry?
Michael would find someone just as adept at making up weird nicknames for people as he himself is.
Michael: *grin* Awesome.

Date: 2010-04-04 03:45 pm (UTC)Actually, in the books he comes from, he and his best friend have made an art out of insulting each other.

Date: 2010-04-04 05:47 pm (UTC)He's also not insulting people to be hurtful. It's just the way he is, and being stuck on a barbaric, backward planet for a couple of millenia made him VERY sarcastic.

Date: 2010-04-04 06:58 pm (UTC)Is it ever established what would happen in the event the device is taken away or destroyed? Would he simply age normally, or would an Urashima Taro scenario happen where he rapidly ages into bones and dust, or what?
(no subject)
Date: 2010-04-04 08:03 pm (UTC)It is established.
Once a person is equipped with a cell activator, the person's body will within a period of eight days lose the ability to regenerate itself. If the device is lost, the wearer has 60 - 62 hours to recover it.
For the first 4-5 hours after the loss, nothing happens. As a matter of fact, while it is recommended that a cell-activator-wearer wears the device without interruption, the effect can also be achieved and maintained by putting it on for about ten or fifteen minutes every four to five hours.
Within 12 hours, the aging process would set in, and the person would be continually exhausted. He would age visibly until 60-62 hours (at which time he would look pretty much mummified) after the loss of the cell activator, something that is called "explosive decay" sets in. Within minutes/seconds, depending on how long the person has already worn the cell activator, the body decays to dust.
Until the end of those 60-62 hours, so long as the body is still a body, the aging-effect can be simply reversed by putting the cell activator on again.
Another few bits of information:
There are two types of cell activators: Some can be passed on from one person to the next, others are keyed to one person's genetic code. Atlan's is the latter. If someone else would put it on, that person would die within minutes, from the destruciton of the genetic codes in his cells. So they would not be able to use it, e.g. to heal someone.
Also, the children of cell-activator-wearers live pretty long. Longer than other people, in any case. Children of two cell-activator-wearers would be extremely long-lived.
The poison-neutralisation-effect of the cell activators also applies to things like alcohol. Atlan can't get drunk very well. He could try drinking large amounts of strongly alkoholic drink. then he might be intoxicated for a few minutes, because the cell activator needs some time to take effect, but it would be a very short experience.

I don't think she'll like that very much, but she'll have to live with it.
What would Atlan feel and smell like to her? Would she be able to tell from his smell that he isn't human? How powerful/dominant would he feel?
And what's his opinion on werewolves?
(no subject)
Date: 2010-04-05 12:35 pm (UTC)I don't think he'd smell any different from a normal human. I expect he would seem rather dominant, yes.
I don't think his opinion of werewolves would deviate from his opinion on humans.

Date: 2010-04-05 09:46 am (UTC)*calms down* Hi, I'm Sivaroobini but go by Brie (Yes. Like the cheese.) here since I play Gabriel. I also NPC Mary Hodges and Primoris.
While I am really excited about Atlan (and very amused at Ricky's first response), I am also concerned about continuity. In this verse Judaeo-Christianity is the supreme and 'true' religion, and the angels were there before anything else existed. They watched and helped God make this Creation, which I always understood to be all of Creation, all of the universe, and not just the Solar System or something. But parallel timelines... personal beliefs aside, it's not something I considered here, though I'm willing to accept it. <3
If this holds true, then the angels would be fully aware of parallel timelines, since God would have created those other places - and yet this is the world Azi and Crowley fight to defend, this is the world where Armageddon takes place and where the angels and demons fight. And if it exists by itself and God didn't create it... I don't know about the others but Gabriel will have a very hard time accepting that. At the least, he'd fly briefly back to Heaven to talk with God. It calls a lot of things into question.
I do hope we can figure out a way to make it work, though, since I personally would love to interact with Atlan.
(no subject)
Date: 2010-04-05 12:46 pm (UTC)That would then really pretty much equate Gabriel's god with the entity Atlan would refer to as "IT". Except that the Rhodanverse has several ITs playing their cosmic game with/against each other. The one Atlan had contact with is "responsible" for our galaxy and a few adjacent ones. And centres its attentions very much on humanity = Earth. Apart from the fact that Atlan would have a pretty damn weird (and possibly inacceptable) way of referring to that entity, from the POV of an angel, I think the problem may be overcome-able.
Parallel timelines needn't even come up in-game, as far as I'm concerned.
