When things are going wrong.
Jun. 12th, 2010 12:29 amI am posting this now, pissed off as I am at the situation, because I know if I let it simmer until tomorrow morning I'm likely to be too irritated to type straight, let alone retain the last bit of politeness I'm still holding on to.
Things are going wrong when new players leave the chat because they feel left out, what with everyone going on about some game that happened once upon a time and didn't work out.
I thought we were clear on this not being NO revisited.
So things are definitely going wrong when people who were not in NO but are in the LTSH Chat feel they need to either read up on Neutral Omens or leave because otherwise there's no way they can participate.
I might as well rename the chat Neutral Omens again, from how it was running tonight.
Sorry, folks, but I'm not running a NO reboot. Ever. I also don't want to hear players tell me "X told me to read NO because it's going to help you get into LTSH."
We're not Neutral Omens. Get used to it. If you can't, someone else will have to take over from me. I'm not going to run the ghost of someone else's game.
To make myself (hopefully) perfectly clear: I do not intend to censor what you can or cannot talk about in the big chat. However, I do expect you to
a.) remember this is NOT Neutral Omens, and
b.) to show those players who never were a part of NO - and that includes me - the courtesy of not presenting yourselves as a closed group that no one but a NO enthusiast can get into. I stopped reading in the chat often enough in the past because the discussion went where only a NO player or NO lurker could follow. I can keep half an eye on the chat to join back in when the topic switches. Others may not.
Additionally, I would like to remind everyone it's the LTSH Friday chat. In my opinion, game matters should take precedence. I don't want to see any player coming in later and asking game questions being talked over again.

Date: 2010-06-12 02:06 am (UTC)I never thought of it as 'revisiting the game' or 'LTSH's past'. To me, it was like, some of us are fans of this thing, so we're discussing it and sharing fanfic and fanart. It's like some of us being fans of, say, The Lord of the Rings; we'd be discussing it, but someone who hasn't read Tolkien would be confused. I myself have been in that role but I do other things and keep an eye on the chat, waiting for it to swing back to something I know. That's all, for my part.
I do recommend NO to friends sometimes, but in the way I recommend the Shoebox Project or good books - to me, it's just an example of GO RP that started out well enough, and is a nice example of combined fandoms and collective creativity. I always tell them to check out LTSH first too. I haven't thought of LTSH as an NO-reboot in over a year because we're definitely a unique game.
I do feel really bad for excluding Micha, though. We got carried away and I can't excuse that. :( I'm sorry.

Date: 2010-06-12 05:40 am (UTC)Personally, I don't mind it when it gets brought up even though I don't know what's what with it (or feel like reading up on it), since it's no different from when I go blithering on about video games no one else has played, or my old RPs.
What I think crosses the line would be observations like "this isn't going the way %PLOT in NO went" or "I preferred the dynamic between these characters in NO." I haven't seen that happen at all.

Date: 2010-06-12 06:18 am (UTC)Not so long ago, several players were complainign about the constant NO references, the constant reminders, etc. They were complaining about that to me. I went and talked to Fox, who at that time was making the decisions, about that, and we removed a whole lot of those references, renamed the chat, etc.
First chance they get, people turn around and practically stab me in the back. I feel betrayed.
Rhaeii (did I get it right this time?), rest easy, I wasn't referring to you.

Date: 2010-06-12 06:42 am (UTC)I didn't think you were referring to me directly, you strike me as the sort to tell someone face-to-face (erm, screen-to-screen? XD) if there was a problem. I had just wanted to clarify and make sure that you understood what my understanding was of it since that had come up when I was applying.
I'm sorry you were betrayed, that's always a hard thing to deal with :(

Date: 2010-06-12 07:13 am (UTC)I didn't think it would be a very good idea to actively point fingers by putting names in that post, though maybe I should've.
Another player very nearly left us before even making her arrival post because someone asked her to read up on NO so that she felt that was a prerequisite that she didn't have the time to fulfill. While I'd been aware of the general fact of that, I only learned about the details of that yesterday, too.
