Anubis looked down at the body of the man he'd been sent to collect, in life the man had been a high ranking official with all the power and wealth the title brought, in death he was just another ka who needed a guide to the spirit world. There was one difference though, Anubis reminded himself, Osiris himself had taken an interest in this ka.

With that in mind Anubis turned his attention to the dismayed ka beside him and gave him a reassuring smile, something his human form could do rather well. "I wouldn't let it get to you, you know, death happens to everyone" he said lightly, the ka glanced at him and then returned to staring at its former body.

Anubis sighed; well he could afford to let the poor ka have a little while longer to get over the fact he was dead, after all in wasn't like he could go anywhere else.

Belial paused, some distance away from the other man-shaped being and the ka. A god. He hadn't been expecting that; then again, if Lucifer sent one of the Crowns to retrieve this soul, he supposed Osiris wouldn't simply overlook it.

"I have a claim on that ka," he said, approaching the god.

Anubis just managed to hold back his yip of surprised, at the sudden voice, and turned sharply to face the newcomer.

Anubis stared at the man...no man-shaped being in frond of him; he didn't recognize him, but then again most of the people he knew had more then one form. Leaning forward ever so slightly he sniffed... Incense, Rosewater and what Sandalwood? Musk? nicer scent then most but definitely not someone he knew.

"Who are you?" ha asked as he looked the being up and down.

Then what the other had said came back to him, and his head snapped up to look him in the face "and what do you mean you have a claim?"

Belial raised an eyebrow. Had he just yipped? And sniffed him?

"My name is Belial. And who might you be?"

Anubis cock his head to one side thinking; no he'd never heard the name Belial before, and from the question the stranger didn't recognize him; good they where on similar ground.

"I am Anubis, Guardian of the Dead," then he added as a after thought "and you didn't answer my question"

Ah, this was the jackal-headed god. Well, if they were going to use titles...

"I am a Crown of Satan and Ruler of the Northern Realm of Hell, and I have spent quite a bit of time ensuring that that human's ka will find its way to Hell. Therefore I would like to think that I have a valid claim."

Hell; so that meant Belial was a demon and by the sounds of it a high ranking one. Well he'd dealt with Ammit for centuries so he wasn't worried about dealing with demons- even if this one could talk and didn't have a crocodile's head. Hmm, he thought, could be interesting.

Anubis glanced at the ka beside him, finding that he was staring wide eyed at the demon. Looking at the somewhat plump lazy looking man a thought occurred to him.

Turning his attention back to Belial he asked "are you the reason he got his position in court?"

"As the Vizier? Yes; that and his ensuing wealth, and the steady stream of young ladies to provide entertainment. The usual. Our deal was that I get his soul in return, though."

Belial smiled at the god. "I'm sure we can work this out."

Well that solved one mystery, "I did wonder how someone like" he gave the ka another glance "well like *him* could become Vizier."

Anubis smiled back at the demon, inwardly he cursed, no wonder Osiris had sent him to get this ka, a deal with a demon for Ra's sake! How was he going to get out of this? If he didn't take the ka to Osiris he would be in real trouble, but he couldn't deny that the demon had a claim.

"Do you mean a deal?"

"A deal, or an arrangement." Belial's smile widened. A deal with a god; this should prove interesting. Still, he had to restrain himself from saying Nice doggie. "What would you want in return for him?"

Anubis raised an eyebrow "want for him, he's not mine to give away, I've not got a choice I've got to take him to Osiris."

He glared at the suddenly smug ka for a few seconds before saying slowly "I can't make a *deal* with you but that doesn't mean I can't make an arrangement"

"Excellent. What sort of arrangement?" Belial raised an eyebrow in return. Why would Osiris want this man's soul so badly?

Yes what sort of arrangement? Anubis went though the options in his head Osiris had to know he'd brought the ka back, why he didn't know, but was there a way to get it back to the demon after-wards? Anubis smiled as a plan came together, if he'd been in a form with a tail it would have started to wag.

"Can you change your form?"

The urge to say Good dog was even stronger now.

"It's not something I do very often, but yes, I suppose. Size and shape. Why?"

Belial snarled, crouching, the barest hint of fangs showing. He could almost appreciate the sinuous grace of this monster; almost, except for the fact that it was threatening him. Behind them, the ka seemed to shiver.

The Serpopard paused it hadn't expected to be challenged, it's forked tongue flicked out as it moved it's head from one target to another.

Anubis tensed ready to attack, as the beast turned its gaze onto the ka, he lunged sinking his fangs into it neck.

Beating his wings, Belial avoided the beast's flailing paws and leapt onto its back. He sunk his claws in, raking down its back. Sorry, snake-kitty, that ka is mine.

"I assume it's to be left alive?" he called, ducking as it lashed its tail at him, trying to dislodge him.

Anubis let go and jumped away before the beast's head could swing round to get him.

"Preferably" he barked before nipping along the Serpopard's side.

"Does it have any weaknesses?" Most creatures of this sort had some sort of weakness, didn't they?

Belial slid down the beast's other side, his claws leaving bloody trails, and took to the air just as its head was swinging around to him.

Dodging a swipe from a paw Anubis called out "underbelly, neck; like a normal animal really." As he finished he sank his fangs back into the Serpopard's neck.

The Serpopard let out a sound that was a cross between a hiss and a raw, it was not happy, it's plan for a easy meal had not gone according to plan. Lashing out at one attacker to the other it started to retreat slowly away from them.

Belial moved to face it, leaving claw marks in its underbelly, and watched it begin to retreat. It hissed at him, and he promptly snarled back.

Anubis continued to nip at the monster as it retreated into the shadows, and then he stood growling until he could no longer smell it close by. Turning to face Belial and the ka his ears came up and his tail started to wag softly.

"Are you alright?"

Belial straightened up, claws disappearing so that his hands looked normal again. He was breathing hard, but beginning to grin.

The grin grew wider as he looked at Anubis wagging his tail. He simply could not resist...

He patted the top of Anubis's head, rubbing behind the jackal's ears. "Yes. Good boy."

"Stop that" Anubis growled weakly, but despite himself he turned his head slightly to give the demon better access to his ears. Some instincts were to strong to fight.

The ka stared.

The priests certainly hadn't mentioned this. Belial smirked, scratching behind Anubis's ears. "Nice doggie. Who's a good boy, then?"

Now that was pushing it a bit, but Anubis didn't say anything. He still couldn't bring himself to pull away from the demon's touch and only just managed to resist the urge to bark in answer.

Glancing over at the ka he noticed that it's expression of shock had been replaced with a smirk, glaring he pulled back from the demon's clever fingers, with a quite whine and moved out of reach.

"We had better go before the Serpopard changes it's mind," he said when he'd composed himself, "the Hall of Two Truths isn't far now." Setting off again Anubis didn't change out of his jackal form. After all there may be other monsters who thought they could could take on a god; he told himself ignoring the real reason was because his dark fur meant that his companions couldn't see his blush of embarrassment.
